Lava forest and viewpoint at Jeju Gotjawal Provincial Park

Gotjawal is a forest environment where lava rocks, trees and vines intertwine. Jeju Gotjawal Provincial Park conserves this landscape while providing designated visitor trails. Slowly observing rocks underfoot and the way trees grow, rather than focusing only on distant viewpoints, reveals how it differs from gardens or the coast.

Official information describes routes with different lengths and durations, a forest viewpoint and guided walks. Use the park map's currently open sections to choose how much walking to do. We suggest looking for tree shapes and plants between rocks without collecting plants, turning rocks over or leaving the trail.

Gotjawal Provincial Park fees, routes and visiting deadlines

The operator lists standard admission for ages 25–64 as KRW 1,000; check proof requirements for age categories and reduced fees. Admission hours are 09:00–16:30 from March to October and 09:00–15:00 from November to February, with visits ending by 18:00 and 17:00 respectively. Choose a section you can finish before closing rather than starting a long route after a late arrival.

Our planning estimate is 1.5–2 hours for the forest, views and breaks, with shorter visits possible on a shorter route. Official guided walks are listed at 10:00 and 14:00 on a first-come, first-served basis on site; recheck weather and operations for the day. If joining a walk, choose the session first, fit travel and meals around it, and use the toilet before setting off.

Prepare footwear, raincoats and children for a Gotjawal visit

Official rules prohibit trail visits in dress shoes, open-toed sandals or platform trainers and require hiking or trekking shoes. Umbrellas, sun parasols, walking poles and crampons are also prohibited. For rain, bring a raincoat and check access rather than planning an umbrella walk. In heavy rain, reschedule instead of assuming the park will open.

Walk slowly with children on paths with rocks and roots; do not assume flat paved paths or a stroller route. Official guidance also restricts pets. We suggest long sleeves and long trousers. Toilets are difficult to access during the walk, so discuss your group's needs at the entrance when visiting with young children or parents.

Combine Daejeong's Gotjawal forest with OSULLOC or a garden

Set the park visitor information center at 178 Educity-ro, Daejeong-eup, as your destination. Check the actual park entrance to avoid confusing it with other similarly named Gotjawal facilities. For public transport, allow for the walk from your stop and return services, arriving well before last admission; choose your route at the information center.

OSULLOC Tea Museum is an option for tea culture and an indoor break after the forest, while Spirited Garden offers a comparison between natural forest and a designed garden. Each requires a separate journey and checks on operating conditions. Our suggested itinerary gives the forest enough time in the morning, then adds either a cultural stop or a garden according to your energy and the weather.
