Gwakji Beach

Gwakji Beach combines Aewol's sandy coast with the culture of cool natural springs. Explore the area around the Gwamul open-air bath and the sea on an Aewol coastal walk. Bath use and water activities must follow seasonal operating rules, etiquette and safety guidance.

Gwakji Beach's sandy shore and Gwamul open-air bath

Gwakji offers more than sea views. The spring-water space enclosed by stone walls shows how springs along Jeju's coast have been connected to daily life. Respect others using this water facility, and take photographs only from positions that do not intrude on their privacy.

Sections where white sand lies beside black basalt offer more varied views of Gwakji. A simple suggested walk back and forth along the beach is enough to enjoy the sea. Water activities, the open-air bath and coastal cafés are separate choices; you do not need to fit them all into one visit.

Allow separate time for Gwakji walks, water activities and the open-air bath

Our planning estimate allows 1–2 hours for a walk on the sand. Add time for changing, showers and rest if you include summer water activities; outside the swimming season, plan around coastal views. The well-known open-air bath is not necessarily usable in the same way at all times, so check access guidance and operating status first.

At the spring-water facility, follow on-site rules on permitted uses such as washing and bathing, and the designated men's and women's areas. Past drinking-water use mentioned in official information does not mean it is safe to drink today. Bring your own drinking water, do not help yourself to water from the facility to drink, and avoid using detergents or soap.

Precautions around the water and spring with children at Gwakji

Focus on sand play with children and stay close to them by the water. A north-facing beach does not guarantee calm waves on your visit. Check lifeguards, designated swimming areas and water-entry restrictions. We suggest protective footwear so children do not run barefoot over rocks or shells.

If bringing a pet, check official restrictions on pets bathing in swimming areas during the swimming season. The open-air bath is a shared everyday space, so follow on-site rules for pets, photography and use. Prepare an alternative indoor plan for strong wind or rain, with only a brief look at the spring and beach before moving on.

Combine the Aewol coast with an indoor exhibition

Check the entrance to Gwakji Beach in Aewol and the actual parking location on a map before arriving. Park and plan a walking route rather than briefly blocking roads around the beach to take photographs. Before visiting several points on the Aewol coast by bus, compare stops, walking distances and the last return services.

One suggested combination is sea views at Gwakji followed by a separate journey to ARTE MUSEUM in Aewol's uplands. The beach and museum are not directly linked by a walk; allow travel time. If you are continuing to Hyeopjae in Hallim, first choose which scenery deserves a longer visit rather than adding many similar beaches.
