Hallasan and the uplands · Forests and Gotjawal
Gyorae Natural Recreation Forest offers walks through Gotjawal, where trees and vines grow between lava rocks. Its twisting trees and rocky ground contrast with orderly Japanese cedar woods. Choose your route before setting off because the ecology and oreum trails differ in length and last-admission time.
Travel planning at a glance
Choose between the officially described 2.5km ecology observation trail and 7km oreum observation trail at Gyorae Natural Recreation Forest. The oreum trail’s last admission is an hour earlier. Prepare trainers or hiking boots for rocky paths. Accommodation and camping require separate Forest Trip reservations.

Gotjawal combines the Jeju words got, meaning forest, and jawal, referring to rocks and gravel. In Gyorae’s woodland, trees and vines grow among uneven lava landforms. Look at stones and changes in ground level, rather than seeing it simply as a tree-lined path, to understand this distinctive Jeju forest.
Exposed roots wrapping around rocks and various ferns provide subjects to observe in Gyorae Gotjawal. Official tourism information also describes former charcoal-kiln and shelter sites, traces of residents’ use of the forest. Read these alongside on-site signs. Do not leave designated paths or collect rocks and plants to observe them.

Information about charcoal kilns and grazing helps explain how the forest was connected with residents’ lives.

The 2.5km ecology trail and 7km oreum trail follow VisitJeju’s route descriptions. This guide’s 1.5–3 hours is an editorial reference, not the time to complete every route. Decide between shorter ecology observation and a longer oreum walk, then check your actual sections and return arrangements on the on-site map.
Forest Trip operating notices list ecology-trail last admission at 17:00 in summer and 16:00 in winter, and oreum-trail last admission at 16:00 in summer and 15:00 in winter. Confirm seasonal application periods and daily changes with the forest. Plan arrival so you do not miss the oreum trail’s earlier last admission.

Wear supportive trainers or hiking boots for uneven lava rocks and roots. Explain the Gotjawal surfaces first to companions expecting a level Japanese cedar-forest stroll. Do not assume a pushchair can complete every route; ask about actual conditions on your intended sections.
An independent observation walk, a cultural-tourism guide’s commentary, and accommodation or camping are separate choices. Check official information for guided sessions and on-site registration. Use Forest Trip to check occupancy and check-in times for accommodation and campsites. Do not confuse trail last admission with room check-in.

Jeju Stone Park in the same Gyorae area offers a way to connect Gotjawal lava rocks with stone culture and Seolmundae Halmang stories. Consider Jeolmul Natural Recreation Forest as a separate walk for comparison with Japanese cedar woods. Even within a nearby area, leave time for rest and travel when walking around several large sites.
