Darangswi’s crater and views over Gujwa’s volcanic hills

Darangswi Oreum has a deep, clearly defined circular crater and steep slopes on all sides. Traditional explanations link its name to the moon-like round crater and its height; it is also known as Wollangbong. From the summit ridge, alternate between views into the crater and across Gujwa’s fields to understand the hill’s size and surrounding terrain.

Official information describes a crater about 115m deep. Enjoy the steep terrain from the viewpoints; it is not a general visitor route down to the crater floor. The story that Seolmundae Halmang pressed down carried soil to form the crater is Jeju folklore, distinct from its geological formation.

Allowing time for steep slopes and crater views

Our editorial estimate is 1.5–2 hours to see the summit and crater views and return. Expect the exertion of ascent and descent rather than a gentle walk like Yongnuni or Abu Oreum. Assess your companions on the initial slope and choose a manageable turnaround point instead of treating the summit as essential.

Descending may put more strain on knees and increase the risk of slipping, so wear comfortable hiking shoes or sneakers. Walking the entire summit ridge needs extra time for photos, breaks and the return. We recommend first seeing the terrain in daylight rather than planning sunrise or night photos, and having an alternative that gives up elevated views in strong winds or fog.

Jeju 4·3 remembrance and separate pet rules for the surrounding trail

The Darangswi area holds the history of a village lost during Jeju 4·3 and the victims at Darangswi Cave. Official information states that the cave entrance is closed, so do not plan a sightseeing visit inside. Read the historical information with respect for the victims and bereaved families, and distinguish memorial-site etiquette from taking landscape photos.

Official pet rules distinguish between the hill, where pets are not permitted, and the surrounding trail, where they may accompany you with a leash and waste bags. Permission for the surrounding trail does not allow a summit climb. With children or parents, first assess whether they can manage the steep slopes; another hill with easier views or a forest walk may be an alternative.

Comparing Yongnuni Oreum and Bijarim for a Gujwa itinerary

Darangswi Oreum and Akkeun Darangswi Oreum are separate hills with similar names, so distinguish your actual destination. Check parking and the designated trail entrance on a map, without entering arbitrary farm roads or fields. Bus travelers should plan the final walk and return service together to avoid a long upland wait after a demanding climb.

Yongnuni offers gentle ridges, while Bijarim offers a shaded plant walk. After climbing Darangswi, consider rest in a forest or on the coast rather than automatically adding another high climb. If interested in Jeju 4·3 history, consider Jeju 4·3 Peace Park as a separate historical visit with its own journey and sufficient viewing time.
