Explore Maksukgae's history and the islands off Beophwan

Beophwan Port is also known as Maksukgae. A story behind the name tells of General Choe Yeong providing quarters for his soldiers here in the late Goryeo period, adding coastal village history to Seogwipo's sea views.

Beomseom, Munseom, Seopseom and Saeseom lie offshore, and the village's Jamnyeo Plaza has a haenyeo statue. A walk around Beophwan Port combines fishing boats, island silhouettes and haenyeo culture.

See Jamnyeo Plaza and the coastal scenery

First look toward the islands from around the harbor, then continue to Jamnyeo Plaza and the village coast. If connecting to Olle Route 7, calculate time for the harbor stroll separately from a long-distance walk.

To explore both Beophwan's haenyeo culture and its island views, visit Jamnyeo Plaza and the seafront in turn rather than taking photos from just one spot. The islands may appear to overlap depending on your viewing direction.

Where families may visit in the haenyeo village

With children, try spotting haenyeo statues or the shapes of islands offshore. Active diving and fishing-gear storage areas are residents' workplaces; do not enter them or photograph people at work without permission.

Explain to children the difference between a haenyeo statue and an actual fishing workplace. Touring the village's cultural spaces does not mean joining haenyeo at work.

Continue from Beophwan-dong to Oedolgae and views of Beomseom

The port fits a coastal itinerary west of central Seogwipo. If walking only part of an Olle route, decide first whether to retrace your steps or take a vehicle from another point, so the return journey does not become too long around sunset.

After Beophwan Port, consider Oedolgae Sea Stack or Saeyeongyo Bridge. Rather than fitting them all into one visit, choose one to start with according to your direction of travel and your companions' energy, and check the actual transport connections.
