Oedolgae Sea Stack

Oedolgae is a scenic site known for a solitary sea stack rising from the waters off Seogwipo and the surrounding coastal woodland paths. Jeju Olle Route 7 passes through this landscape; choose between a short viewpoint visit and a longer coastal walk. Stay behind cliff railings and within designated walking areas as you admire the rock's outline.

Travel planning at a glance

Oedolgae is a coastal walking spot in Seogwipo with views of a sea stack and woodland paths. Allow 45–90 minutes as an editorial estimate for viewpoints and photos, separately from walking all of Jeju Olle Route 7. Stay behind cliff railings, and do not plan water activities or access to undesignated areas below the rock without separate permission.

Oedolgae's sea stack, sea cliffs and legends

Oedolgae's coastal scenery combines a sea stack rising about 20m above the water with surrounding sea cliffs. The official introduction explains how waves shaped the lava terrain over a long period. Rather than taking only a close-up of the rock from one spot, follow designated paths and view the woodland, sea and cliffs together to appreciate its solitary form.

The story of Halmang Rock, about a grandmother who turned to stone while waiting for her husband, and the legend of Janggun Rock add context to Oedolgae's name. We suggest reading these separately from the facts of geological formation. Its popularity for photography does not justify going beyond railings or below the cliffs; keep routes through viewpoints clear for other visitors.

Allowing separate time for Oedolgae viewpoints and Olle Route 7

Allow 45–90 minutes as an editorial estimate for a short visit to Oedolgae's viewpoints, photos and nearby woodland paths. The fact that Jeju Olle Route 7 passes here does not mean you can complete that entire route in this time. For a long Olle walk, check the official start, finish, distance and return transport separately, and calculate your time at Oedolgae as a separate part of the itinerary.

First choose an open walking section from the entrance and your return route, then plan a rest at a viewpoint. Even if you want to continue farther, set your range according to the day's remaining time and your companions' stamina. If sunset approaches while you are taking coastal photos, we suggest returning in daylight rather than extending the walk.

Visiting Oedolgae with children: cliff photography and wet-weather precautions

Stay close to children near cliff railings, and explain that they should not climb rocks for photos or descend into undesignated areas. Even on maintained paths, do not assume every section has the same slope or width. Older relatives and companions needing mobility assistance can focus on nearby viewpoints according to their actual walking ability.

Take shorter steps on woodland paths and leaf-covered sections wet after rain, and along coast exposed to strong winds. Photos of water activities or accounts of nearby coastal experiences do not mean you may enter the water anywhere at Oedolgae. We suggest shoes with good grip and drinking water, and a shorter walk when waves or winds are strong.

Choosing a coastal itinerary with Oedolgae, Cheonjiyeon Falls and Saeyeongyo Bridge

Check Oedolgae's visitor entrance and parking in Seohong-dong, Seogwipo, on the map. Find the official walking entrance rather than using the offshore rock itself as your driving destination. For public transport, allow for the actual walk from the stop to the entrance and the return service. For a long Olle route, also decide whether to retrieve your vehicle afterward or return by other transport.

Cheonjiyeon Falls offers warm-temperate woodland and a pond after coastal views, while Saeyeongyo Bridge adds port and bridge scenery. Each requires a separate journey, so do not confuse them with the same short walk around Oedolgae. Our suggested Seogwipo itinerary pairs one seaside stop with one woodland or port stop, with a meal and rest in town between them.
