Gapado

Gapado is an island off southwestern Jeju where low-lying paths and stone walls connect sea views and fields. Green barley is a spring landscape, not a view that stays the same throughout the year. Decide on ferries from Unjin Port and your return time before choosing your village and coastal walks.

Travel planning at a glance

Scheduled ferries to Gapado depart from Unjin Port; the operator's official one-way sailing reference is approximately 10 minutes. Check return sailings, identification and ticketing deadlines before walking the island's low-lying paths. Green barley is seasonal, and port access and waiting time must be added separately to island walking time.

Seasonal green barley, stone walls and coastal paths on Gapado

Paths through Gapado's villages and along its coast offer different scenery. Fields behind stone walls, low rooftops and the nearby sea let you observe island life without climbing a high viewpoint. Start near the port and choose whether to return by the coast or through the village.

Green-barley scenery changes with spring growth and harvest schedules. Do not expect festival photos to show current autumn or winter conditions; check the fields for your visit period. Barley fields are residents' farmland, so do not cross stone walls or enter between crops for photos.

Booking Gapado ferries and allowing time for island walks

The operator at Unjin Port recommends advance booking and states that website bookings are available up to the day before travel; same-day travelers should enquire about remaining capacity. Reserved passengers are advised to prepare for ticket collection at least 40 minutes before departure, and ticket sales close 10 minutes before departure. Recheck the latest guidance on documents, including identification for every adult.

Divide your time on Gapado among walking, meals and rest before your assigned return sailing. A low-lying island does not mean every coastal and village area can be explored quickly. Calculate walking time separately from ferry waiting and port travel; before planning another island immediately afterward, compare whether each return sailing works.

Gapado with children: bicycles and sea winds

Level paths reduce walking effort, but shelter from sun and wind may be limited. With children or older adults, prepare drinks, hats, outer layers and rest time. Distinguish paved paths from the rocky coast, and do not create shortcuts across sand, wetlands or farmland.

If choosing a bicycle, check rental conditions and the return deadline against your ferry. Slow down even on flat ground because paths can be narrow and shared with residents' vehicles and pedestrians. If rough seas are forecast, recheck sailings before visiting and allow flexibility in subsequent flights and accommodation on Jeju's main island if your return is delayed.

Gapado's Unjin Port departure and southwestern Jeju after returning

On Jeju's main island, go to the scheduled Gapado and Marado ferry ticketing point at Unjin Port. Do not enter Gapado's reference address in Gapa-ri as the main-island terminal; check port parking and bus access. Once your outbound ferry is confirmed, record your return ferry and dock together.

After returning, consider Songaksan's coast or the Sanbangsan area, but each adds travel and outdoor walking. If companions are tired after the island walk, choose only a short stop or head for a meal or your accommodation. If sailings are canceled, change your itinerary to places in southwestern Jeju's main island.
