Songaksan is a volcanic landscape in Daejeong with a coastal circuit trail overlooking Sanbangsan and the southwestern islands. The summit area and summit trail are closed for ecological recovery through 2027-07-31, so plan around the coastal circuit. Explore the sea views alongside the history of the wartime remains.
Travel planning at a glance
Plan a visit to Songaksan around the open coastal circuit trail rather than a summit climb. Official information states that the summit area and summit trail are restricted through 2027-07-31. Our planning estimate is 1.5–2 hours for sea and island views and breaks; shorten your visit in strong winds.

Songaksan is a southwestern coastal walking destination with views of Sanbangsan and Hyeongjeseom, and toward Gapado and Marado when the weather allows. Its terrain was formed by overlapping volcanic craters, and the summit area is closed for ecological recovery. Plan to explore the relationship between mountain and sea from the open circuit trail.
Artificial caves in the coastal cliffs and other remains preserve traces of military-base construction and the forced mobilization of Jeju residents during Japanese colonial rule. Read the on-site history information as well as photographing the views. Viewing historic remains does not permit entry into undesignated areas below cliffs or inside caves; stay within the areas open to visitors.

Official tourism information lists 2027-07-31 as the scheduled end of the ecological recovery closure for the summit area and summit trail. Distinguish this restriction from access to the other routes. Do not bypass restrictions by following old summit or crater routes or visitors' photographs; choose only circuit-trail sections marked as open now.
Our planning estimate is 1.5–2 hours for the coastal circuit trail, views and breaks. You can also make a short visit by walking one section from the entrance and returning; there is no need to complete the whole trail within a fixed time. On days with short daylight or strong winds, choose a turnaround point first and leave time to travel to your next stop.

The circuit trail's open sea views also leave it exposed to wind. Strong winds can slow your pace and make you cold, so we suggest bringing a windbreaker and water. Hold children's hands, follow instructions near railings and cliffs, and avoid blocking other walkers when stopping for views.
If you encounter horses or grazing areas, keep your distance on marked paths rather than approaching, touching or feeding the animals. Do not run or climb structures for photographs near wartime remains. If rain or fog reduces visibility, shorten the visit and return before sunset rather than waiting excessively for the islands to appear.

Find the official Songaksan circuit-trail entrance and parking in Sangmo-ri, Daejeong-eup. Plan driving and walking from an open trailhead rather than routing to the summit point on a map. Bus users should check both their stop and the last departure time so return services do not finish before they complete the walk.
Sanbangsan offers a comparison with a lava dome and designated visitor paths, while Yongmeori Coast has wave-eroded volcanic layers. Check Yongmeori's access separately, and remember that combining Sanbangsan's steps with Songaksan's circuit trail adds more walking. Our suggested itinerary groups Daejeong and Sagye-ri stops in one direction, dropping one stop if strong winds or restrictions require it.
