Hallasan National Park Yeongsil Trail

Yeongsil is a southwestern Hallasan route with views of Byeongpungbawi, Seonjakjiwat and Witse Oreum. It is separate from the routes to the Baengnokdam summit. Your approach distance and total hiking time depend on whether you begin walking at Yeongsil Rest Area or the lower ticket office.

Travel planning at a glance

From Yeongsil Rest Area, Witse Oreum is 3.7 km one way and Nambyeok Junction is 5.8 km one way. This route does not reach the Baengnokdam summit, and standard hikes do not require a reservation. If starting at the lower ticket office, add the separate approach of about 2.5 km to the rest area.

A Witse Oreum route past Yeongsil's rock formations and Seonjakjiwat

Yeongsil's scenery changes strikingly from forest to volcanic cliffs. Steep steps and slopes on the ridge near Byeongpungbawi mean this is not a level stroll simply because the route is relatively short. View Yeongsil's rock formations from designated trails; do not climb the rocks or go beyond fences.

The upper Seonjakjiwat area offers high-altitude scenery of low-growing plants and volcanic rocks. Before setting out, decide whether to turn back at Witse Oreum or continue along open sections of the south-wall circuit trail. Viewing Baengnokdam's crater wall and reaching the crater summit are different experiences.

Byeongpungbawi

This section is sloping. Choose a suitable place to stop for views and leave room for hikers behind you to pass.

Seonjakjiwat

A high-altitude area for seasonal vegetation. Flowering times and scenery vary with the weather.

Distinguish Yeongsil's Witse Oreum return hike from the distance to Nambyeok Junction

The official one-way distance from Yeongsil Rest Area to Witse Oreum is 3.7 km. Returning by the same trail makes 7.4 km; extending to Nambyeok Junction makes the one-way distance 5.8 km. Walking the additional approach of about 2.5 km between Yeongsil Management Office and the rest area increases the total distance.

Yeongsil is not a summit-reservation route, but seasonal entry and descent restrictions apply. The cutoff for continuing beyond Witse Oreum toward the south wall differs from the entrance deadline. Official information lists times by section, so choose your turnaround time using the restrictions for your hiking date and on-site instructions.

Prepare for a first Yeongsil hike, strong winds and ice

Allow generous turnaround time with children or companions who find long walks difficult, as the early ridge is steep. Everyday trainers are not suitable for every season; snowy conditions require anti-slip equipment and warm clothing. In poor weather, consider a shorter nearby walk or an indoor plan.

Fog, lightning and strong winds can rapidly change visibility and how cold it feels at Seonjakjiwat and on the south-wall circuit trail. Even after reaching Witse Oreum, check whether the south-wall connection is open that day. Bring drinking water rather than relying on springs or shops, and stay on designated paths when taking photographs.

Plan transport by distinguishing Yeongsil's ticket office from the rest area

If driving, check whether vehicles can reach Yeongsil Rest Area or only the ticket office. Road-access conditions and parking are separate from whether the hiking trail is open. If parking below, include the uphill approach to the rest area when planning your hike.

Public-transport users walk a separate approach from the stop near Yeongsil ticket office to the actual trail entrance. If descending toward Eorimok or Donnaeko, arrange transport between the trailheads. Choose an itinerary that leaves your car at Yeongsil and finishes elsewhere only after deciding how to retrieve it.
