Eoseungsaengak Peak

Eoseungsaengak is an oreum reached from beside Eorimok Visitor Information Center, with views toward Hallasan and Jeju City. It is a separate out-and-back summit hike, not a route to Baengnokdam or Witse Oreum. Despite the short distance, prepare for steps and mountain paths rather than a level walk.

Travel planning at a glance

From the entrance beside Eorimok Visitor Information Center, Eoseungsaengak's summit is 1.3 km one way, with an official reference time of about 30 minutes. Returning by the same path makes 2.6 km; add time at the summit. This is not a Baengnokdam connection. Check the day's access, ice and entry times first rather than focusing on reservations.

Eoseungsaengak summit views and traces of Hallasan's history

Eoseungsaengak is a Hallasan nature-study trail that gains elevation over a relatively short distance through forest and steps. The summit opens out from the forest, offering views toward Hallasan and northern Jeju in clear weather. For summit views, consider fog and cloud height as well as whether the rain has stopped.

Military remains from Japanese colonial rule at the summit invite reflection on Jeju's history alongside the scenery. Follow signs and visitor access limits; do not treat the historic structures as playground equipment for enjoying the views. Observe the crater's shape and summit vegetation from designated paths rather than cutting across off-trail areas.

Forest and steps

Even this short route involves climbing steps. Take breaks and match children's walking pace.

Summit views

Fog and strong winds affect the open views. In strong winds, shorten your stay and enjoy the scenery from a safe position.

Eoseungsaengak return hiking time and reservation requirements

The official estimate of about 30 minutes is one way to the summit. Allowing 1–1.5 hours for descent, photography and breaks is an editorial planning estimate, not a fixed duration for every visitor. Allow a more generous turnaround schedule on snowy paths or with small children.

Standard Eoseungsaengak visits are separate from Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa summit reservations. National park entry hours and weather restrictions still apply to visits without a reservation. Do not stay after sunset simply because this route is shorter; check the day's access hours at the entrance before setting off.

Prepare for Eoseungsaengak with children and snowy paths

This is an option for showing children Hallasan's forest and oreum terrain, but it is not a level stroller route to the summit. Decide according to their ability to climb steps independently and manage the descent. For companions who find walking demanding, consider a rest near Eorimok Plaza separately from the summit hike.

There are no shops anywhere along the trail, so bring water and any simple food you need. Temperatures are lower than on the coast, and shaded steps may remain icy. On snowy days, prepare warm clothing and anti-slip equipment; do not underestimate winter mountain paths based only on photographs of the summit scenery.

Check both Eoseungsaengak's entrance and Eorimok Plaza

Eoseungsaengak starts beside Eorimok Visitor Information Center. Do not follow a map's central oreum point or the direction of the reservoir onto undesignated mountain paths. Check parking and walking routes around Eorimok Plaza and the entrance signs, then use the designated trail.

Allow separate time to reach Eorimok Plaza from the roadside bus stop, and check your bus home after the hike. Adding Eorimok's Witse Oreum route is a much longer hike, not a simple extension of a short visit. Compare your companions' energy and access deadlines before choosing, rather than fitting both routes into one day.
