Footprint Fossil Park

Footprint Fossil Park introduces the footprint fossil sites and geology of the Sagye and Sangmo-ri coast. View public interpretation and coastal scenery without assuming that you can step onto the original fossils in protected areas or see them at all times.

Travel planning at a glance

Footprint Fossil Park introduces a site where fossil footprints were found in coastal sedimentary layers. We suggest 20–30 minutes in the information and walking areas open to visitors. Check whether original fossils can be viewed and what protective restrictions apply. Do not collect specimens or enter rocky shore areas.

The story of fossil footprints on the Sagye and Sangmo-ri coast

The park introduces a site where human and animal fossil footprints were discovered in coastal sedimentary layers. Read the explanations to learn about the formation of Jeju's landscape and traces of past life.

Distinguish the locations of protected original fossils from general walking areas. An introduction to a fossil site does not mean visitors may go down onto coastal rocks and search for fossils themselves.

Distinguishing original fossil viewing from public information areas

The suggested 20–30 minutes is an editorial itinerary for reading information open to visitors and viewing coastal scenery. Check current management guidance on whether the originals can be seen; seeing footprints is not guaranteed.

Older photos and descriptions from the time of discovery may differ from current permitted access. Follow barriers and designated paths. If coastal geology interests you, compare other designated viewing sites as well.

Discussing with children why traces of the past need protection

Discuss with children why old footprints matter and what information could be lost if people step on them or take rocks away. Instead of collecting specimens, read the information and record your visit in public areas where photography is permitted.

In high waves or strong winds, shorten walks near the sea. Do not go down onto rocks outside designated paths, and respect cultural and natural heritage protection areas.

Continuing from Hyeongjehaean-ro to Sanbangsan and Songaksan

The reference address is 대정읍 형제해안로 192. Distinguish the broader fossil site from the park's visitor location, and check the actual entrance and parking guidance.

Sanbangsan is an option for adding southwestern volcanic landforms. Songaksan offers another coastal-viewing itinerary, but check each place's restrictions and open paths. Do not use original fossil protection areas as shortcuts between destinations.
