Sanbangsan Mountain

Sanbangsan is a large lava dome rising above Sagye-ri. General visitors use only the designated route from the ticket office to Sanbanggulsa Temple; it is not a summit-climbing destination. Observe the sea and mountain shape along the steps, and check Yongmeori Coast’s daily access separately.

Travel planning at a glance

Plan Sanbangsan as a visit along the designated ticket office–Sanbanggulsa route, rather than a summit climb. Official information restricts access outside designated areas until 2031-12-31. Our editorial estimate is 1–1.5 hours for the steps and views. Individual adult admission to the cliff vegetation area is KRW 1,000.

Sanbangsan’s lava dome and views from Sanbanggulsa Temple

Sanbangsan’s lava dome rises from southwestern Jeju’s relatively level terrain, making its outline distinct even at a distance. It suits viewing the form from below and walking the designated route rather than aiming for the summit. If interested in volcanic terrain, compare it with Yongmeori’s layered cliffs.

Sanbanggulsa is described as a Buddhist worship space inside a cave on the mountain’s lower slopes. Visit quietly and photograph without disturbing worship or movement. Treat the Sanbangdeogi story about dripping water as legend, distinct from geological formation or any assurance that the water is safe to drink.

Admission, stepped viewing route and summit restrictions

Official visitor information prohibits access outside designated areas from 2022-01-01 to 2031-12-31 and permits only the path from the ticket office to Sanbanggulsa. Do not plan a summit route or bypass via side paths. We suggest 1–1.5 hours as an editorial estimate for the steps, return and viewing, adjusted for walking pace and restrictions on the day.

The Seogwipo operator’s fee table lists individual adult admission to Sanbangsan’s cliff vegetation area at KRW 1,000. Combined fees with Yongmeori Coast also appear, but do not provide access when the coast is closed. Before purchasing, check separate temple conditions, discount documentation and that day’s visiting and admission deadlines at the ticket office or in official guidance.

Visiting with children or parents and taking care on steps

The viewing route has many steps. With parents or children, plan rests and consider the demands of descending first. It is not a smooth, level stroller route to Sanbanggulsa. If walking is difficult, viewing the mountain’s outline and Sagye-ri’s sea from below still reveals Sanbangsan’s character.

Official information does not permit pets. Take care in strong winds, rain and on wet steps, and do not remove rocks or plants from worship or plant-protection areas. Do not step onto railings or undesignated rock faces for views, or extend your route to force a view through fog.

Planning daily access separately for Sanbangsan and Yongmeori Coast

Search for Sanbangsan’s official ticket office and parking in Sagye-ri, Andeok-myeon. Use the Sanbanggulsa visitor-route entrance rather than summit coordinates as a driving destination. For public transport, include the actual walk between Sanbangsan and Yongmeori, bus stops and the return service.

Nearby Yongmeori Coast is an option for geology viewing, but high tide or waves may close it; check separately before setting out. If choosing Songaksan next, distinguish its surrounding trail from the restricted summit. Our suggested order is to confirm Sanbangsan first, then choose additions according to the coast’s opening window.
