Geomun Oreum is a World Natural Heritage site where guided interpretation accompanies a walk through the forest and crater of the volcano that formed the Geomun Oreum Lava Tube System. Access is managed with visitor passes and instructions, so check reservations, departure times and routes before planning the rest of your eastern Jeju day.
Travel planning at a glance
Geomun Oreum visits follow interpretation and visitor-pass arrangements, with advance reservations recommended first. The operator lists booking until 17:00 the day before, with an exception for same-day on-site registration when places remain. The summit, crater and full routes take different times. Geomun Oreum is known as the volcano that formed the lava tube system extending toward the northeastern coast. Its distinctive visit combines interpretation with the wooded crater, volcanic bombs, lava-collapse features and wind holes. Unlike volcanic hills where you can walk grassy ridges independently, follow the designated guidance and visitor-pass arrangements when observing this natural heritage.
The crater combines warm-temperate vegetation, including aucuba and Japanese anise trees, with volcanic terrain. Traces of Japanese military facilities also add historical context. The hike explores the terrain where the lava tube system began; it does not follow an underground cave from Geomun Oreum to Manjanggul. Distinguish the actual area covered by the visit.

Use one before departure and consider whether your companions can manage the chosen route.
Pets are not permitted. Food is prohibited except emergency snacks such as candy and chocolate. Rain or expected strong winds may result in same-day restrictions even with a reservation. Confirm the meeting point at the visitor information office at 선교로 569-36, where the Jeju World Natural Heritage Center is located. Entering the hill’s land address and following an arbitrary forest path is not consistent with this managed visit. For buses, allow for arrival at the center, the final walk and check-in. Drivers also need time to walk from parking to the information office.
Check the center’s indoor exhibition hours, fees and reservation conditions separately from the outdoor Geomun Oreum hike. Choosing the long full route may make it difficult to reach Manjanggul before ticket sales close, so compare both visit durations first. On a relaxed day, our suggested combination is to add the World Natural Heritage Center exhibition for geological context and keep other outdoor plans short.
