Sara Oreum is a high-altitude volcanic hill known for its summit crater lake and viewpoint south of the Seongpanak trail. Jeju’s official inventory gives an elevation of 1,324.7m and a height of 150m above surrounding ground. Despite a name similar to Sarabong in central Jeju City, plan it as a national park hike with a different location and walking distance.
Explore crater water, surrounding forest and Hallasan views from the observation deck. The representative archive photo shows water in the summit lake, but levels and extent vary with season and rainfall. The same water surface or reflections are not guaranteed every day; observe from designated decks.

The national park’s Seongpanak introduction describes the Sara Oreum junction 5.8km from the trailhead, followed by a 600m climb to the summit lake and viewpoint. Adding the figures gives about 6.4km one way or 12.8km return on the same path. This is a sum of the official guidance figures, not a separate measured-route distance.
The 600m is not the full distance from Seongpanak entrance. The Baengnokdam summit guidance of 9.6km one way and 9 hours return also cannot be applied directly to a visit to Sara Oreum alone. Include viewpoint observations, rests and the descent after the junction. Adding Baengnokdam requires separate consideration of summit reservations, passage deadlines and stamina.

Follow designated decks and viewpoint routes around the lake without entering the water’s edge or crater. Rain, fog, strong wind and winter ice can affect paths and visibility, so check national park restrictions for the day. Families seeking summit-lake views should first consider the return distance rather than choosing this as a short, level stroll.
Bring drinking water, light food, spare clothing and footwear suitable for wind and temperature. The national park advises day visits, descent before sunset and designated paths. The trailhead is Seongpanak Trail Information Center at 제주시 조천읍 516로 1865. Do not use Sara Oreum’s representative mountain lot address, 남원읍 신례리 산2-1, as a vehicle access or parking entrance. Find Seongpanak Trail Information Center on your map and check the approach from parking or your bus stop to actual trail check-in.
Plan to descend by the same path to your Seongpanak starting point, with arrangements for the day’s bus services, rental-car retrieval and journey home.
