From Aheunahopgol forest to Seokguram Hermitage

Climb toward Seokguram through mixed pine and broadleaf forest, with deep valleys and rocky scenery. This suits travelers seeking a closer view of forest and valleys rather than Hallasan’s summit and high mountain grasslands.

Inscriptions on the valley’s rocks and rock faces are a feature around the hermitage. Follow temple etiquette and on-site access guidance; do not climb rock faces or descend into the valley off designated paths.

Planning Seokguram’s 1.5km one-way and return walk

Official guidance gives the route to Seokguram Hermitage as 1.5km and 50 minutes one way. A return walk on the same path is 3km. These figures do not include all rests, time at the hermitage or the walk from your bus stop to the trailhead.

Seokguram is an official Hallasan trail that does not require advance reservations. It does not connect to the Baengnokdam summit, and routes without reservations still follow entry deadlines and weather restrictions for the day. Avoid starting late and descending after sunset.

Water and footwear for a short forest hike

Official guidance states that there are no shops along the entire route, so bring water, light food and a wind-resistant outer layer. Choose supportive footwear for woodland stone paths and climbs and descents.

With children or beginners, consider the effort of walking uphill and descending by the same route before relying on the 50-minute reference time. In wet, windy or icy winter conditions, check on-site restrictions and consider turning back within permitted sections near the entrance.

Find Cheonwangsa entrance and the trailhead near the National Cemetery

Official guidance says that a walk of about 10 minutes through Japanese cedar forest from Cheonwangsa’s temple entrance on Road 1100 reaches the trailhead toward the Jeju National Cemetery parking area. The official page lists bus 240, but check the exact stop, services on your travel date and last bus in the Jeju Bus Information System. Include time after descending to return to the parking area or roadside bus stop, and follow parking guidance without obstructing cemetery visitors’ vehicles.
