Sehwa Beach

Sehwa Beach is a small natural beach near the villages of Gujwa. It is not an officially opened and managed designated swimming beach. The width of the sand changes considerably with the tide, making it suited to walks and exploring village culture.

Travel planning at a glance

Sehwa Beach offers walks with low-tide sand, black basalt and Gujwa village scenery. Official information says it is not a designated, managed swimming beach, so swimming is not recommended as the default activity. The suggested 45–90 minutes is an editorial estimate. Plan around tides and the Haenyeo Museum and five-day market schedules.

Sehwa Beach’s basalt, sand and village scenery

Sehwa is a small coast where sand has accumulated over basalt, contrasting white sand and black rocks with the water. Village scenery near the coastal road and harbor forms part of the view. It suits a slow seaside walk and exploration of local everyday culture rather than a long stay on an expansive sandy beach.

Official visitor information states that Sehwa is not an officially opened and managed designated swimming beach. Despite the word “beach” in its name, do not assume it has the same conditions as a summer swimming beach with marked swimming areas and lifeguards. Focus on seaside photos and village walks. When deciding whether to enter the water, follow on-site guidance and consider waves and tides first.

Timing a low-tide walk and Sehwa Five-Day Market

At high tide, the sand may narrow or disappear beneath the water; at low tide, sand and rocks are exposed. Allow 45–90 minutes as an editorial walking estimate, and check that day’s tides first if taking photos is your aim. Low tide does not mean every area among the rocks is walkable. Adjust your walk to the actual beach conditions.

Official information states that Sehwa Folk Five-Day Market is held on dates ending in 5 or 0. Allow time for market browsing and meals in addition to the beach visit. Bellongjang’s schedule is described as variable, so check notices for your visit date rather than expecting it to be held on a fixed date.

Distinguishing Sehwa from swimming beaches and taking care around rocks

With children, we suggest a short activity observing the colors of sand and basalt rather than swimming. Wet rocks and moss can be slippery, so wear comfortable walking shoes and avoid areas reached by waves. Watch the direction of incoming water when taking photos, and avoid walking out to distant exposed rocks.

The harbor and village remain part of residents’ everyday lives. Do not block vehicle traffic for photos or photograph people at work up close. Check conditions for using facilities and chairs in residential spaces. In rain or strong winds, our suggested alternative is to shorten the exposed beach walk and consider the Haenyeo Museum’s indoor exhibitions first.

A Sehwa village itinerary connecting to the Haenyeo Museum

Sehwa Beach and the Haenyeo Museum combine well for a Gujwa cultural itinerary. Official information gives an approximately 10-minute walk from the Sehwa-ri or Haenyeo Museum bus stop to the beach, but actual routes and pace vary with your companions. Bus travelers should check both the stop and return service. Drivers should park without obstructing harbor or lane traffic.

Seeing everyday tools and community culture at the Haenyeo Museum before walking Sehwa Beach adds a different perspective on the village’s sea. Bijarim is another option for an old forest after the coast. If walking Jeju Olle Route 20, distinguish a short Sehwa walk from the full route’s distance and arrange transport from the endpoint first.
