Exhibitions on haenyeo daily lives, workplaces and life stories

The Jeju Haenyeo Museum explains haenyeo culture through their homes, diving tools, food, childcare and lives combining farming and fishing. The operator presents exhibitions on daily life, workplaces and life stories. The focus extends beyond diving scenes to families, villages and labor outside the sea.

The area in front of the museum includes a memorial to the haenyeo anti-Japanese movement of 1932. Read together the perspectives of diving skills, community rules, labor and history to see haenyeo as more than figures in travel photos. Exhibition materials do not grant permission to follow people closely at work or request photographs; distinguish cultural viewing from everyday workplaces.

Checking visiting hours, closures and interpretation services

The operator lists visiting hours of 09:00–18:00 and ticket sales of 09:00–17:00. Closures include January 1, Lunar New Year, Chuseok and Mondays. If Monday is a public or substitute holiday, closure may move to the next non-holiday. Check fees, proof for discounts or exemptions and temporary operating changes for your visit date, and enter with time to spare before the exhibitions close.

Our editorial estimate is 1–1.5 hours for the main exhibitions and reference materials. If joining cultural interpretation, allow for the session start and an approximately 40-minute guided explanation. Online and on-site registration and guide availability may change, so check official interpretation reservations. Prepare separately for the participation conditions of educational programs or events and for an independent visit.

Exploring everyday tools with children while respecting work and privacy

With children, look for the roles of the tewak float, mangsari net bag and diving tools to connect diving with everyday life. Do not touch exhibits or use them as activity equipment; follow on-site signs. For sea swimming or a haenyeo experience, check the age, safety and reservation conditions of separately operated programs rather than assuming they are part of the museum.

Residents and haenyeo continue their daily lives around Sehwa. At actual workplaces, avoid interrupting work or requesting close-up photos. In rain, our suggested order is to see indoor exhibitions first and add the beach if the weather improves. Viewing the outdoor memorial has different weather conditions from the exhibition rooms.

A Gujwa haenyeo culture itinerary with Sehwa Beach

Set the main museum visitor entrance on 해녀박물관길 as your destination and check the walk to Sehwa Beach on a map. Bus travelers can connect a Gujwa coastal walk by checking the Haenyeo Museum stop and return service. If you have booked interpretation, plan around museum check-in and departure time before beach photos.

Sehwa Beach brings you closer to the village sea described in the museum. Bijarim provides a different outing, observing forest vegetation after the haenyeo culture exhibitions. When combining museum and beach, check indoor closing times and tides separately, and plan a walk without assuming Sehwa is a designated swimming beach.
