Abu Oreum is known for its basin-like round crater and the circular Japanese cedar grove within it. The mostly grassy exterior contrasts with the trees inside, making the shape easy to observe at close range. Rather than chasing the highest summit view, we suggest slowly observing the crater and forest outlines from the ridge.
Official information records names such as Ap Oreum and Aboreum and a traditional explanation that the hill resembles a seated elder. Although the outer slopes are relatively gentle, the crater interior has steep and eroded areas. A photogenic cedar grove viewed from the ridge does not make the crater interior a permitted walking route.

Allow 45–75 minutes as an editorial estimate for the ascent, descent and ridge views. Walking farther around the rim or taking more photos adds time, so choose your turnaround point and return direction at the entrance. Even on a short route, move slowly uphill with children or parents and allow separate time for breaks.
Our suggested walk follows the designated approach to the ridge, views the crater, then returns after a distance suited to your companions. If walking several volcanic hills in one day, calculate Abu’s short visit and the next hill’s climb separately. Avoid creating shortcuts across the ridge for photos to help conserve the site.

Do not enter the crater or cross fences; follow on-site trail guidance. Avoid photo routes that trample protected plants or enter the cedar grove without permission. Even if the grassland views look open, paths and slopes may be slippery after rain, so check the surface first.
When there is little shelter from sun or wind, bring water, a hat and an outer layer and shorten your time on the ridge. Anyone who finds walking difficult can check the views available near the entrance and return early. For pets and other site rules, check official information and daily signs, keep dogs leashed and clean up after them.

Use Abu Oreum’s designated entrance in Songdang for directions. The hill’s land address may differ from the visitor entrance, so check the walking start and parking information together. Do not mistake ranch or farmland access roads for visitor paths. For buses, arrange the final walk and return service separately.
Baekyaki Oreum offers views of surrounding eastern hills, but some of its highest summit area is restricted, so check open sections. Seongeup Folk Village shifts the focus from grassland nature to traditional village culture. Do not combine Abu and Baekyaki without rest simply because they are short; choose one according to your companions’ fitness.
