Woljeong-ri Beach

Woljeong-ri is an eastern Jeju coastal village whose name means “where the moon stays.” Combine a beach walk with rest overlooking the sea, and choose water activities such as surfing only after checking the separate operators’ schedules, reservations and safety requirements.

Travel planning at a glance

Woljeong-ri in Gujwa combines a beach visit with village cafés. The suggested 1–2 hours is an editorial estimate for walking and rest; water activities need separate time. For swimming, check the official season and swimming areas. For surfing and kayaking, check operator participation and weather cancellation conditions, and respect passage through residential lanes.

Sights at Woljeong-ri Beach and its seaside village

Woljeong-ri’s name is explained as “where the moon stays.” Its bright beach and water colors combine with sea-facing cafés, restaurants and village scenery, making it easy to mix walking with rest. A famous photo of chairs at a particular café does not make it an essential stop; choose a place for the view and the kind of break you want.

Woljeong-ri’s coast forms part of Jeju Olle Route 20. Official information also mentions a connection with the Gimnyeong–Woljeong Geotrail, while advising visitors to check the latest operating and maintenance status. Do not assume that every formerly described walking path remains open in the same condition; choose your section using that day’s guidance and map.

Connecting the beach and village

Combine a seaside walk with a café or meal break.

Choosing part of a walking route

Distinguish the full Olle and Geotrail itineraries from their current conditions.

Separating time for cafés, beach walks and surfing

Allow 1–2 hours as an editorial estimate for a beach walk and rest. A long café stay or a meal needs additional time. Do not automatically include surfing lessons or equipment rental in a short beach visit. If booking an activity, plan around the meeting time, instruction and changing first.

For swimming, check the official season, designated areas and on-site safety supervision. Surfing, kayaking and snorkeling packages may have different age, swimming ability and equipment requirements, as well as weather cancellation and refund rules. Rather than expecting the same activity to be available whenever you arrive, check the operator’s program for your visit date and decide whether to participate.

Water activity conditions and respect for residential lanes

Seaside cafés and restaurants offer rest stops, but the village also has lanes where residents live. Do not stand in the road for photos or block home entrances, and keep conversation and vehicle noise down at night. If a photo spot is on private property or inside a business, check its conditions first. Distinguish residents’ living spaces from public beach walkways.

With children, combine a sandy-beach walk with short breaks, and check whether every companion meets the requirements for water activities. Our suggestion is to leave flexibility to shorten exposed coastal walks and switch to indoor exhibitions in rain or strong winds. Cafés do not make the beach safe during storms, so follow weather restrictions first.

A Woljeong-ri coastal route connecting Gimnyeong and Sehwa

Set your destination according to whether you want the Woljeong-ri Beach entrance or a specific facility. Use confirmed parking spaces with a rental car and avoid entering narrow residential lanes arbitrarily. For buses, check the stop, beach walk and onward connection. If carrying luggage, separate a café break from plans for long-distance walking.

Add Gimnyeong Beach to the west to compare lava rocks and sand, or Sehwa Beach to the east for a smaller coast, village and haenyeo culture. If walking a long stretch of Olle Route 20, arrange return transport from the endpoint first. Our suggested combination is to choose the contrasting features of two places and allow time to rest, rather than feeling obliged to walk all three beaches at once.
